Gazetteer

Nestled on the northern sword coast, between Neverwinter Wood and the Sword Mountains, is the town of Phandalin. Centuries ago, Phandalin was a thriving farming and mining settlement with deep ties to its neighboring communities. The road to Phandalin was abandoned after years of orc attacks obliterated every caravan that passed down the road, conquering Phandalin in the process. When the orcs were driven out, the village was left largely in ruins.

Only in the past few years have settlers began to build a new village on the ruins of old. Phandalin is now a rough-and-tumble frontier town, filling with miners, prospectors, treasure seekers and anyone else who wants to try to make their fortune, either through their own hard work or off the hard work of others.

3 - 4th August 2024

After waiting about half an hour, and about to go in looking for Sildar, it appears Klarg was true to his word and the unconscious body of Sildar floated out the cave entrance. They then put him on their horse and headed back to town. When they arrived, they spoke to the inn keeper and put Sildar to his bed (after a small amount of healing by Bob, which stabilised him).

Kythorn 25, 1479.
The party check in before breakfast on Sildar - he is very weak, and thinks the day in bed might do him some good. He manages to say that he thinks Gundren is being held at Cragmaw Castle by the spider. Sister Garaele visited last night and checked in on him. After they have eaten their breakfast, they set off around town to see if anyone knows about the castle, but end up collecting more and more quests instead.
After lunch, Devrill decides to try and infiltrate the redbrands tavern - whilst he's in there, clearly out of his depth, trying to play cards and not lose too much money (he breaks even), he spots a wanted posted of Aida - 25gp, signed by The Spider. He then escapes, nonchalantly and goes back to the others.

2 - 14th July 2024

Kythorn 24, 1479.
The party arrive in Phandalin and are greeted by Elimna Barthen who asks about Grunden; the party replied that they haven't seen him and they had arranged to meet him here. After some interrogation of the captured goblin (mostly by Elimna using her broom and Aida offering cake), they learnt that Grunden had been taken prisoner on the order of the spider and was being held in the eating cave. They persuaded Tharg (the goblin) to show them where this was, and began to mount a rescue mission.

Mid afternoon, they get back to where they are ambushed and walk up the trail that Tharg has indicated where they are camped. Unfortunately, they aren't paying too much attention and Aida steps into a snare trap. Rather than lowering her gently to the ground and untying the rope, they opt for trying to shoot the rope (Steig, and missing) or chopping it (Devrill) which results in Aida falling onto her head. Oops. Devrill then takes the lead, and noone is quite sure how it happened deftly dodges a pit trap in the middle of the path. Tharg snickers happily.

Finally they reach the cave, they tie Tharg up to a nearby tree in case he tries to warn anyone and they try to sneak in, but are caught by the lazy goblins on guard duty (after almost making it to the cave entrance) - they do however make short work of the goblins; mostly by Aida hitting with her greataxe and removing their heads. The goblin boss amongst them is finally shot by Devrill - not sure he was mortally wounded, he pulls Steig's arrow out, taunts them, and keels over, quite dead.

After making relatively short work of the goblins outside, they resume sneaking back into a cave. Bob and Steig don't have darkvision, and noone wants to light a torch. They pass by the cave containing the wolves without much incident, and even get so far as to notice a goblin hiding on the bridge in the distance; however in the darkness, they get a little seperated (Bob and Steig) and they decide to try a narrow fork to the left rather than following the river like Tharg told them. This results in Devrill being bitten by a giant snake, unhappy at being disturbed. When they pull back, the goblin on the bridge has gone.

They carry on following the stream, and just manage to avoid being swept away by a torrent of water as the goblins release the water in the first pool. As they reach the cave, the goblins succeed in opening up the second pool, and whilst most of the party hangs on, Bob is swept back down to the entrance. Dvrill goes after her, and the other two engage the goblins.

In a long protracted fight, the pair of them (Steig and Aida) manage to kill of most of the goblins; Steig remembers to light a torch, and as they face the final one, Devrill and Bob return. After killing the 4th goblin in that cave, Aida finds herself about 30ft away from Klarg the goblin boss who wants to kill them all - however, as he has just seen the unfortunate sight of one of his minions being split in two in one hit, Aida manages to negotiate the release of Sildar (originally asking for Gunden, but discovering he has been given to the spider already).

Klarg things about the offer, but his self-preservation is greater and accepts - the party return to the cave entrance and await Sildar being delivered to them alive....

1 - 30th June 2024

Summer Solstice; Kythorn 20, 1479. Aida is in the Golden Fleece tavern in Neverwinter with her friend Grunden Rockseeker; he was telling you how he was about to go back to the mining village of Phandalin where he's been based for the past year looking for the Wave Echo cave when he came into something of great interest - rather than take his wagon (and the supplies) back to Phandalin himself, he got you interested enough along with your friends Devrill Chesterblade and Steig Stevenson as well as Roberta Flagstaff (bob) who was the boson on the same ship as Steig and is currently out of work whilst its waiting for repairs to take them back (for 10gp per person) whilst he went ahead with Sildar Hallwinter.

The journey down the High Road towards Leilon was relatively uneventful - at this time of year it was relatively busy with caravans going back and forth between Leilon and Neverwinter, but after you turned off onto the Triboar trail towards Conyberry the traffic dropped off, and shortly after you set off on the morning of the 24th, you encountered some goblins who tried to ambush you. The party successfully captured one of them, and you carried on into Phandalin. You arrive in Phandalin just after midday.
